Wondering if a Nurse Practitioner can fully manage your care?
At Pure Health Primary Care, we get this question all the time — especially when patients need tests or imaging done.
Let’s clear it up:
Yes, Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Ontario can order blood work, X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, MRIs, mammograms, and more. You don’t need a doctor to get the care or diagnostics you need.
What We Can Order as NPs:
• Blood work (CBC, iron, B12, thyroid, diabetes screening, etc.)
• Urine tests, stool tests, swabs
• X-rays and ultrasounds
• CT scans and MRIs
• Mammograms and bone density scans
• ECGs and Holter monitors
• Specialist referrals (cardiology, gynecology, GI, endocrinology, etc.)
If something needs to be done to help diagnose or manage your condition — we can usually order it, right from your visit.
Why That Matters
You don’t have to:
• Wait for a doctor’s referral
• Visit multiple clinics
• Get bounced around the system
You can start and stay with your Nurse Practitioner — and get the right test, at the right time, with the right follow-up.
When Do We Order Imaging?
We often send patients for:
• Pelvic or abdominal ultrasounds for pain or irregular bleeding
• MRI for back pain, joint issues, or injury
• CT scans for head trauma, suspected masses, or abdominal issues
• Mammograms as part of routine breast cancer screening
• X-rays for injury, arthritis, or persistent pain
If you’re unsure whether your concern warrants testing — we’ll assess and guide you based on clinical evidence.
No OHIP? No Problem.
Even if you’re uninsured or new to Ontario, we can still order these tests. If you’re covered under:
• IFHP (Interim Federal Health Program for refugees)
• ODSP
• Medavie Blue Cross
— we’ll help you access the care you need.
